BMW DESIGN EVENTS: SHAPING FUTURE DRIVING INNOVATION
BMW AND THE RYDER CUP.
Strong partners since 2006.
It is not just golf fans who view the Ryder Cup as the third-biggest sporting event in the world, after the Olympic Games and the football World Cup. The biennial team competition between the top golfers from the USA and Europe is an electrifying event, which cannot be compared to any other golf tournament.
The BMW links with the Ryder Cup began in 2006 when it was the Official Car Partner at the K Club in Ireland. The company has since had a presence at each Ryder Cup match, both in Europe and the United States, and took a leading role as an Official Partner at Celtic Manor (Wales) in 2010, Gleneagles (Scotland) in 2014, and Le Golf National (France) in 2018.
BMW extened its influence on both sides of the Atlantic in November 2018: The commitment of BMW to the game of golf worldwide has been further strengthened with the announcement that the company is to become the Worldwide Partner of The Ryder Cup for the matches between the United States and Europe at Whistling Straits in 2021 and in Rome in 2023.

THE BMW ERA.
2006
Triumphant home win in Ireland.
BMW’s debut as partner of the Ryder Cup ended with a hands-down victory for the European team. Ian Woosnam’s squad outclassed the USA at the K-Club, eventually winning 18.5:9.5. The most emotional moment of the competition came when Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke, whose wife had died of cancer just weeks before the Ryder Cup, sank his winning putt.
2008
Azinger takes revenge.
It was the first, and still the last, Ryder Cup victory for the USA in the BMW era. Captain Paul Azinger managed to forge his troops into a tight-knit unit, which left the Europeans wanting at Valhalla Golf Club (Louisville, Kentucky): the Americans claimed a comfortable 16.5:11.5 win on home soil.
2010
Thrilling finale on Monday.
For the first time in the history of the Ryder Cup, the tournament was still in full swing on the Monday. Persistent rain at Celtic Manor Resort (Newport, Wales) left the organisers with no choice. What developed was true sporting drama, with captain Colin Montgomerie and his European team just getting their noses in front to win 14.5:13.5.
2012
The "Miracle of Medinah".
What played out at the Medinah Country Club on the outskirts of Chicago in 2012 was one of the most impressive comebacks in the history of sport. Even today it is still hard to believe what happened. José María Olazábal’s European team trailed 6:10 going into the final day’s singles – but fought back to triumph 14.5:13.5.
2014
Anniversary in the home of golf.
The 40th Ryder Cup was appropriately held in the country that gave the world the game of golf. Gleneagles, in Scotland, hosted a largely one-sided Ryder Cup, which saw European captain Paul McGinley’s tight-knit unit take on a US team with clear problems. Europe, on the other hand, played some dazzling golf to win 16.5:11.5.
2016
Team USA takes revenge.
Four years after the miracle of Medinah, the Americans, whose captain was once again Davis Love III as in 2012, got their first win in eight years and only their second success in the previous eight duels. In the Hazeltine National Golf Club (Chaska, Minnesota), the US team defeated Team Europe with Official Partner BMW by 17 to 11.
2018
Europe dominates in Paris.
The Ryder Cup returns to continental Europe for only the second time, having previously visited Valderrama in 1997. Captain Thomas Bjørn’s team proves to be an unbeatable unit at Le Golf National, thrashing the Americans 17.5 to 10.5. Francesco Molinari scores a maximum five points for the hosts, while Sergio García becomes the highest points scorer in Ryder Cup history with 25.5 points.

BMW COURTESY CAR SERVICE.
In 2018, BMW was a partner of the Ryder Cup for the seventh time and contributed to a successful event. In Paris, 225 saloon cars from the latest range of BMW models covered roughly 400,000 kilometres, ensuring that the players, organisers and VIP guests always arrived at their destination on time and relaxed.
BMW EXPERIENCE.
The 270,000 spectators at the 2018 Ryder Cup experienced sheer driving pleasure and the unique atmosphere at Le Golf National during the 2018 Ryder Cup. A large BMW Lounge was open to all golf fans and offered an excellent view of the 7th hole. The BMW Experience allowed 500 guests to enjoy an exclusive programme with VIP hospitality tickets, accommodation in the Hilton Paris Opera, and the BMW Gala Night. José María Olazábal, captain of the legendary comeback victory by the Europeans at the 2012 Ryder Cup, gave guests some fascinating insights into what goes on behind the scenes and into the thoughts of a Ryder Cup captain. Furthermore, a host of BMW cars were on display around the course, including the BMW X2, BMW X4, BMW i8 Roadster, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series.
RYDER CUP TEAM BMW.
Twelve lucky winners experienced the 2018 Ryder Cup up close with BMW. In the months running up to the event, BMW Golfsport set its fans a series of tasks on its social media channels and at selected BMW tournaments on the European Tour. The winners of these twelve challenges made up Ryder Cup Team BMW and were invited to Paris. There, they not only experienced the epic battle between the USA and Europe, but also met the captain of Ryder Cup Team BMW: José Maria Olazábal, the mastermind behind the Miracle of Medinah.
#DRIVETOGLORY.
Golf fans could give their excitement about the Ryder Cup free rein at the major BMW tournaments on the European Tour in 2018. BMW exhibited the Ryder Cup trophy at both the BMW PGA Championship (London) and the 30th BMW International Open (Cologne). Visitors were able to take home a photo with the legendary golden trophy, as a memento.
