Thanks to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the innovative new generation of BMW diesel engine from the BMW Efficient Dynamics engine range can deliver an agile performance and excellent responsiveness even at low rpms, all while being exceptionally fuel efficient and low in emissions.


The 8-speed Steptronic transmission sets new benchmarks in comfort and dynamic performance and is a key element of BMW EfficientDynamics. The unusually fine increments between gears facilitate optimum power delivery at all speeds.
This reduces fuel consumption significantly, while allowing the driver to enjoy increased sportiness and dynamic performance. The engine speed is reduced, particularly at high speeds, which in turn reduces both fuel consumption and engine noise.
The converter clutch also helps – even if the car is in manual mode. Together with the fast engine speed transitions and precise transmission tuning it guarantees incredibly smooth gearshifts.
Integrated functions such as predictive drive train and the constant monitoring of the vehicle's movements and the traffic situation considerably affect the way the transmission shifts gears. Regardless of the current driving mode, the system always selects the most suitable gear. The transmission control unit is linked to the navigation system, so depending on the route, the predictive drivetrain switches between a more athletic, responsive setting (SPORT mode) and a more comfortable setting with fewer gear shifts (COMFORT mode).


The ECO PRO mode helps drivers reduce their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on their driving style – according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study.

  • “Coasting”

    The coasting function (only in conjunction with Steptronic transmission), the route-ahead assistant (only in conjunction with Navigation system Professional) and ECO PRO route (only in conjunction with Navigation system Professional or Business) make it possible to save a further five percent.
    The coasting function decouples the drive train from the engine and the vehicle rolls without any engine resistance. The car "coasts" when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator between 50 and 160 km/h and does not apply the brakes. If needed, the route-ahead assistant can intelligently suppress coasting.

  • Route-ahead assistant

    Based on data from the navigation system, the route-ahead assistant recognizes speed limits, built-up areas, bends, roundabouts, turns and motorway exits, and advises the driver to stop accelerating at just the right moment.

  • ECO PRO route

    ECO PRO route shows the most efficient route based on the traffic situation, driving style and local conditions. The on-board computer displays the percentage of fuel that can be saved by driving along the route selected by ECO PRO route.


The intelligent energy management in the BMW 1 Series is provided by a number of standard-feature BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including the Automatic Start/Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering and Optimum Shift Indicator. The interplay between these technologies ensures sustainable mobility and maximum efficiency.

  • Automatic Start/Stop Function

    The Automatic Start/Stop function makes sure that fuel is only used when the car is actually driving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is idling and the foot is off the clutch (manual transmission), or when the care brakes to a complete standstill (Steptronic transmission).
    A signal in the Info Display indicates that the Automatic Stop/Start function is active. As soon as the clutch is pressed (manual transmission) or the foot taken from the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine turns itself back on automatically.
    The Automatic Start/Stop function never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned. A central control unit restarts the engine if required, even when the car is at a standstill -- for example, if the car starts to roll forward or if the windscreen becomes foggy.
    The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.

  • Brake Energy Regeneration

    Every time the brakes are hit, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result: reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – classic BMW EfficientDynamics.

  • Electric Power Steering

    Electric power steering optimally adjusts the steering support to the current speed. This results in direct, precise steering behaviour at high speeds and effortless manoeuvrability when parking. The steering only consumes energy when it is really necessary. This saves fuel and reduces emissions.
    Instead of a hydraulic pump, it relies on an electric motor. In conventional systems, this pump must be constantly powered by the engine, but this electric support only runs when the steering wheel is being moved. When driving straight ahead or maintaining the same steering angle (e.g. on long bends), the electric motor is not active and does not consume any energy. By flexibly adjusting the steering support to match the current driving situation and speed, steering comfort is improved.

  • Optimum Shift Indicator

    Perfectly timed gear shifts can significantly help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. Optimised gear shifts, lower fuel consumption – the engine electronics calculate the most efficient gear for each driving situation and engine speed. An illuminated arrow symbol appears in the Info Display whenever the vehicle could be operating more efficiently in a higher or lower gear. The system also recognises quick acceleration, and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed has increased. BMW internal comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around four per cent less fuel.
