With BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW combines efficiency and driving pleasure with the aim of approaching the ultimate goal of zero-emissions mobility.
It has enabled the BMW Group to reduce the CO2 emissions of its European fleet of new cars by 30% since 1998, with a further 25% reduction anticipated by the summer of 2020. As of summer 2013 there are already 22 BMW models under 120g CO2/km. Our cars’ intelligent energy management and lightweight construction, as well as improvements in aerodynamics and engine efficiency all combine to make sustainable mobility a reality even today.
Every BMW features the very latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. These include BMW TwinPower TurboTechnology, the Auto Start-Stop function and the ECO PRO Mode. Our research also focuses on the development of innovative engine technologies such as BMW ActiveHybrid and BMW eDrive technology, as well as the BMW Hydrogen 7 with hydrogen drive.
Inspired by the EfficientDynamics philosophy, BMW i develops visionary new vehicle concepts based on electromobility, such as the BMW i3 (Megacity Vehicle) and the BMW i8. As well as featuring many existing BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, these vehicles also benefit from innovations in intelligent lightweight construction, such as the use of carbon. Our engineers’ talent for innovation has brought about a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions and a simultaneous increase in performance and driving pleasure − all of which makes every drive in your BMW even more enjoyable.

ECO PRO MODE.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.
Another feature of the ECO PRO Mode is the coasting function in combination with automatic transmission: if within a speed range of 50–160 km/h the driver takes their foot off the accelerator and does not brake, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts – i.e. rolls without engine power.
The on-board computer displays your bonus mileage, in other words how many additional kilometres you have gained from using ECO PRO Mode.

AERODYNAMICS.

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.

  • Air Curtain and Air Breather

    The front apron is a prominent design feature that embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of "curtain" on the outer side of the wheels. Then there’s the Air Breather, which channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

  • Rear spoiler and Air Blade

    The rear spoiler at the roof edge and the Air Blades joined to it at the sides go together to form a highly efficient so-called "trailing edge". The precisely defined air flow at the rear reduces disruptive air swirl and the braking effect of negative pressure to a minimum.
