AERODYNAMICS.

The design of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is systematically geared towards the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The aerodynamically optimised front apron and the underbody, in particular, impress with their innovative new features aimed at reducing drag and fuel consumption.
Embodying the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy in a visible design feature is the front apron of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The integrated Air Curtain guides the airstream along the front wheel housings via two vertical inlets. Thus accelerated, the stream of air then forms a “curtain” around the outer sides of the wheels. This curtain reduces turbulence and drag, thus lowering fuel consumption.
The smooth underbody lining and the engine compartment screening are further details that enable a significant enhancement in aerodynamics. Yet the new lining features not only bring a considerable gain in terms of aerodynamics, they also provide improved acoustic insulation and increased corrosion protection as practical benefits.

BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION.

Until now, braking meant giving away energy. Brake Energy Regeneration now puts an end to this: when you brake, energy is recovered and the battery is loaded.
As soon as you release the accelerator or apply the brake, the energy liberated is used to charge the battery. This decreases the load on the engine, reduces emissions and saves fuel.
The targeted generation of electrical energy also has another advantage: At full acceleration, the engine also has the propulsive force at its disposal that would otherwise be channelled off to charge the battery in conventional systems. The result is an increase in not only cost-efficiency but also driving fun.

ECO PRO MODE.

ECO PRO Mode helps you to drive especially efficiently. As soon as you select the consumption-friendly ECO PRO Mode fitted as standard using the Driving Experience Control, the intelligent system goes into action and – depending on your individual driving characteristics – enables you to reduce fuel consumption.
ECO PRO Mode gears everything towards maximum reduction of consumption: accelerator pedal and gearbox parameters as well as shift points are all optimised. The heating/climate control strategy is adapted to achieve optimum consumption. On the Control Display you can read how ECO PRO Mode is actively lowering energy consumption.

  • ECO PRO Tips

    ECO PRO tips advise you on how to drive more efficiently – it m ay for example recommend that you accelerate moderately. Which saving potentials are implemented is for you, the driver, to decide. Following the ECO PRO tips will enable you to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20%*. The bonus range in the on-board computer shows you exactly how many additional kilometres you can now drive.
    If you’re curious to find out how efficiently you are driving with the ECO PRO Mode, you can simply take a look at the consumption history. The Efficiencytainment displays also show which technological innovations are currently being employed to improve efficiency. You can thus see when Brake Energy Regeneration is operating and when the Auto Start Stop function is active.

AUTO START STOP FUNCTION.

Red lights, traffic jams, road works – in everyday driving situations there are many instances where the engine is idling, unnecessarily burning fuel. The Auto Start Stop function in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan – standard in all engine and gearbox combinations – switches off the engine when the vehicle stops temporarily and thus avoids unnecessary fuel consumption.
The Auto Start Stop function in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan switches off the engine as soon as the vehicle is not moving and the driver disengages the clutch for manual gearboxes or operates the brake for automatic transmissions. However, intelligent electronics only deactivate the engine when no energy is needed by other loads and there is no adverse effect on your safety and travelling comfort.
So, for example, the engine remains active until the optimum running temperature has been attained or until the interior climate has reached the desired range. Depending on the type of transmission in the vehicle, when the engine has been switched off by the Auto Start Stop function, either releasing the brake or engaging the clutch will cause it to start up again in a fraction of a second. The result is less fuel consumption and fewer emissions.

INTELLIGENT LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

BMW saves on weight, while you save on fuel consumption. Intelligent lightweight construction reduces fuel consumption and improves driving characteristics. A shining example of how to unite efficient and dynamic driving. Even in the new BMW 3 Series.
BMW engineers use a multitude of high-tech materials in the design of a BMW vehicle: lightweight materials such as aluminium in the front of the car and chassis, high-strength steel in the body together with ultra modern plastics. Engines and drive components employ highly advanced magnesium alloys.
This intelligent lightweight construction lowers the weight of components by up to 25%, results in outstanding body stiffness and passive safety for drivers and passengers in BMW vehicles. It also improves the dynamic driving characteristics thanks to a balanced weight distribution between front and rear axles.

8-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

The most dynamic and comfortable way to save: the 8-speed automatic transmission not only ensures incredibly soft changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption. The transmission can be combined with all power units, including entry-level engines.
Only the rev counter will reveal how swiftly and comfortably the 8-speed automatic transmission changes gear. The individual gears are finely graduated so that the change takes place with small rev intervals and the transmission process itself is imperceptible. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level that allows it to make optimum use of its strength and efficiency. The system is assisted by the newly developed and more efficient converter clutch. At high speeds the engine revs drop due to the additional gears, thus decreasing fuel consumption and also engine noise.

  • Automatic gear system

    BMW supplies the optional Sport automatic for an even more agile sensation of gear-changing and driving. In addition to faster gear changes, this additionally contains two paddle switches on the steering wheel and a shortened gear change lever, which makes an even more sporting style of driving possible.
